• install mode

  • node will mount an nfs-root file system from master
  • formats local disk with system/swap/work partitions
  • downloads a tar.gz image of the operating system
  • does local configuration based on IP (node#, etc.)
  • reboots in disk mode

• disk mode

  • normal operating mode
  • after booting the kernel, it's using the operating system from the local disk (from install)
